It is very common today to hear about people making the decision to go back to employees after retiring in recent years. In almost all cases, it comes down to lifestyle decision of any kind. For example, some people prefer to go back to work because they are totally bored out of their minds and want to be active in the job after a short time away. Many others have had their investments slammed on the market, losing significant value, and the need to go back to work so they can maintain a certain standard of living. Still others have spent their assets and ongoing retirement portfolio but have money locked in areas where it is not very liquid, they have to go back to work for spending cash.
Regardless of the particular situation for you, your time in “retirement” has probably translated into what many would consider a “gap” in the history of your employment. I would like to offer some suggestions and words of caution on how to address employment gaps and other types of conditions on the new phone.

The first order of business is identifying the type of work you will pursue. Depending on your situation, you may be looking for a job that is exactly what the latest position or one that is completely different. If the work is similar, you will want to play up your experience and achievements as well as time in the industry. If you are going to an unrelated situation, you will want to locate work history and accomplishments so that they are translated into terms that any new line of work force, and understand.
Don ‘t try to hide any gaps
A common error made by the people in your state is trying to cover up the fact that you have not been employed for a period of time, either 1 year or 5 years. Now, if you retired at the end of 2008, and are put together again early in 2009, I would not believe that the “gap.” As such, simply start working history with the latest professional mission. If you have more than one calendar year gap, the list “Family Sabbatical” or “Early Retirement” with the corresponding dates and location next to it. No other information is wanted or needed here. Keep in mind, the purpose of this post is to overcome the method that many HR reps see the re-appearance for unexplained gaps in employment.
Do not try to explain
I do not advocate a space in new or cover letter to explain away why you went on the market, or why you want to back. At this stage in the game, hiring managers, recruiters and HR reps are not interested in this information. The really only want to know whether you have the skills, experience, and track record of someone who can be effective in this position. You can discuss this information in an interview setting, though a lot will not even be appropriate to talk about at this level either.
